Project Information

United Way of Central Maryland is a nonprofit organization serving the Greater Baltimore region with programs focused on housing, education, health, and economic advancement. With a century of community impact and a wide range of initiatives; from their 211 helpline to neighborhood-based family centers. The organization required a digital presence that could effectively communicate their mission and guide diverse audiences to the resources they need.

The engagement involved a complete website rebuild to align with updated brand guidelines. I was responsible for custom theme development based on provided design specifications, with assistance on content population in preparation for launch.

What I Built

Starting from an empty theme, I developed a custom WordPress theme with pixel-perfect fidelity to the provided design comps. The site demanded a more complex and active UX than a typical corporate build, with subtle animations included in many UI elements throughout the website theme.

A defining feature of the build was the complex mega-menu navigation system. The site's deep information architecture spans programs, initiatives, reports, membership networks, and regional resources. The mega-menu needed to expose this structure intuitively while remaining accessible and performant across devices.

Technical Approach

The theme was built to accommodate the organization's extensive content needs while maintaining design integrity and editorial flexibility. Clean, semantic markup ensures accessibility and maintainability, and the theme architecture supports the ongoing content updates typical of an active nonprofit.

The Result

A robust, user-friendly web presence that serves as both a resource hub for the community and a platform for donor engagement. Built to spec and ready to support United Way's next century of impact.
